In the first place. the observer can work only with his experiences, and these are limited by his senses and the instruments he uses to extend his senses. This process happened to coincide with some degree of opening up of first Afghanistan and then Pakistan to anthropological research. Balanced reciprocity involves a moderate amount of trust and social distance. Harris was against historical particularism and Boasian theories. Cultures are integrated within themselves. When the institute received a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation in 1932 for the expansion of its research program, the object of this program was defined as “bringing about a better understanding of the factors of social cohesion in original African society, the ways in which these are being affected by the new influences, tendencies towards new groupings and the formation of new social bonds, and forms of cooperation between African societies and western civilization” (International … 1932, p. 1). “These questions,” the institute stated, “are of the first importance to the African peoples themselves, to the administrator, to the educator, to the missionary, and to the settler and trader” (1932, p. 1).
