They were told the counsel which the count palatine had given, and which seemed good in the eyes of the emperor. As it has been in regular use for centuries, many phrases from its services have passed into the English language, either as deliberate quotations or as unconscious borrowings.

The First Prayer Book, enacted by the first Act of Uniformity of Edward VI in 1549, was prepared primarily by Thomas Cranmer, who became archbishop of Canterbury in 1533. Jane became Queen of England, but only reigned for nine days. This mystery, this miracle of Christ's bodily presence in the Lord's Supper, had been left, he thought, in the Gospel as the test of our submission, as an exercise for our faith. And there is an interesting instruction that if any bread or wine remain the curate is to have it for his own use.

He said to him the third time: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? In the Baptism service the signing with the cross was moved until after the baptism and the exorcism, the anointing, the putting on of the chrysom robe and the triple immersion were omitted. But who of Scotland's sons shall open the roll of martyrdom? Though prepared by a commission of learned bishops and priests, the format, substance, and style of the Prayer Book were primarily the work of Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, 1533–1556.

"No one of those who preceded him excelled him in writing well," says Raemond, "and few since have approached him in beauty and felicity of language." These are some of the larger non-Trinitarian (non-Protestant) religions in North America. Targoff shows how the projects of composing eloquent verse and improving liturgical worship came to be deeply intertwined; how new literary practices became a powerful means of forging common prayer, and controlling private and otherwise unmanageable expressions of faith.

In June 1549, the county exploded into rebellion and thousands of angry commoners, together with many parish priests and some gentlemen, gathered at the ancient hill fort of Castle Canyke near Bodmin. Every one who has eyes to see, and a heart to understand, must acknowledge that Protestantism stands at the very center of the field, lifting its head king-like above all other actors, and looking serenelydown upon the hosts of its foes.
